Chia, flax, and hemp – What’s the difference?

Incorporating hemp seeds into daily meals has become a growing trend among health eaters. Just like the more popular chia seeds and flax seeds, hemp seeds can provide fountains of nutrition to our bodies. All three types of seeds offer excellent levels of Omega-3 fatty acids, protein, and other essential nutrients but vary when it comes to nutritional profiles.

Chia and flax seeds contain higher levels of soluble fibre, but hemp seeds, like our Hemp Harmony Hemp Seeds, outshine both when it comes to protein servings. Two tablespoons of hemp seeds serve roughly 7 grams of protein which equates to the same amount of protein from two egg whites. Even better, the protein in hemp seeds is unique because it contains all essential amino acids unlike most plant foods.

It’s clear that hemp seeds have a few unique health benefits. Hemp seeds contain three-times more Omega-6 (the same fatty acids found in fish oil) than Omega 3’s, and produces iron and zinc, which are important for oxygen distribution to the body and strong immune system support.

In short, hemp seeds, chia seeds, and flax seeds are all healthy and have unique nutrition profiles. Consume them based on on what your body needs, not just because of trends. Most importantly, mix it up! There is no reason to stick to eating one type of seed—Eating healthy can be fun, too.

Add a tablespoon or two of Hemp Harmony Hemp Seeds from Earth’s Menu to boost your day-to-day productivity. Our hemp seeds are hulled, non-GMO, and certified by Health Canada. Check out our variety of hemp products.
